That is a fantastic idea. My students currently are exploring different books to read for our next Literature Circles unit, and that would allow for some individual exploration into them finding which book best suits them both in rigor and interest!

I doubt, but nevertheless hope, that your maneuver can work in China. I wrote “opium” on the board and had students use their phones to translate to Chinese. Ditto “addiction.” I then said, “Do you know that China is plagued by yet another opium?” I paused as students squirmed uncomfortably in their seats, but then grabbed a student’s smartphone, announcing as I lifted it up, “This is China’s new opium problem.” Students at first all smiled and then burst out in laughter, totally agreeing with my assertion.

What you’re missing is that Google+ is always there, always working, always flowing in and around you making using it almost transparent. Google+ lives in the world that you live in during day-to-day work, Googling, doing email, etc. Conversely, Facebook feels like going somewhere. It’s a bizarro parallel universe on the Internet, that makes you feel naughty for using it during work hours, and causes fatigue. Google+ is very different from Orkut or Wave, because it lives on a very special URL… http://www.google.com

It’s awful pretty and I’m finding it useful and easy to use in a way that Diaspora hasn’t been. Still don’t know if it will live or die, but at first pass, much better than Wave. The hangout feature is cool, and I like the control the Circles easily give me over what I share with whom. Time will tell.
